3 MOVIES FILMED IN PALM BEACH, FL
Many people visit a new place and feel as if they’ve been there before, only to realize that they’d seen a movie that was filmed there. Few towns can compete with Palm Beach when it comes to legendary scenes; the area’s amazing climate and picturesque locations make it the ideal setting for all kinds of movies. Here are some of the most famous.
SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT
One of the most iconic road movies in history was filmed right in West Palm Beach. It featured Burt Reynolds as Bo “Bandit” Darville, a bootlegger who attempts to illegally transport 400 cases of beer from Texas to Atlanta in less than 28 hours. Helped by his partner Cledus “Snowman” Snow and a runaway bride he meets along the way, he drives across the country with the police hot on his tail. The 1977 movie’s success prompted a sequel three years later, also shot in Palm Beach.
This comedy classic was released in 1980 and is about the adventures of a young caddie in an upscale golf club, who’s trying to earn enough money for college. It’s fair to say that things don’t exactly go according to plan, with many subplots and hilarious characters appearing at every step of the way. It featured many iconic names in comedy, such as Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray, ranking high on ESPN’s list of the top 20 sports movies of all time.
Fast forward 17 years to another unforgettable Palm Beach movie. Loosely based on true events, Donnie Brasco is the story of an undercover FBI agent played by Johnny Depp who infiltrated a notorious Mafia family in 1970s New York City. Also featuring screen legend Al Pacino, as a Mafia hitman who vouches for Depp’s character, this powerful crime drama shows the inner workings of criminal organizations and the psychological effects on infiltrators. The movie makes full use of Palm Beach’s beauty and shows the protagonists enjoying themselves on the sandy beaches and at the Rapids Water Park.
2 FAST 2 FURIOUS
Released in 2003, 2 Fast 2 Furious is the second installment of the well-known The Fast and the Furious franchise. It tells the story of two undercover police officers who embark on a mission to bring a famous drug lord to justice. The movie’s plot and action scenes were perfect for Palm Beach, with thrilling car chases being filmed in Miami and in the Florida Keys, while the drug lord’s mansion is a gorgeous villa located on Miami’s 32nd road. The combination of Miami’s urban locations and Palm Beach’s natural beauty made for an absolutely stunning film.
With great weather all year round, green palm trees, and golden beaches, it’s no wonder that many timeless movies were shot in and around Palm Beach. With a mix of natural landscapes, lavish estates, and interesting urban locations, the area is a filmmaker’s dream and will no doubt feature in countless other movies in the future.
