Aston Martin has developed its first electric vehicle in a partnership with Williams Advanced Engineering. No longer will lovers of the Rapide S have to choose between luxury car features and environmentally-friendly electric engines. On the outside, the Rapide E looks very similar to its gas-powered counterpart, the Rapide S. The Rapide E has a honeycomb mesh grille rather than the horizontal slat grille of the Rapide S. A new big splitter replaces the bumper on the Rapide E. Overall, Aston Martin has kept its classic British styling, but engineered the Rapide E to be 8% more aerodynamic than the gas-powered Rapide S. The Rapide E’s improved aerodynamics improves the range of the electric battery. Part of the effort to improve aerodynamics included removal of no-longer-needed exhaust pipes and closing in the wheel covers.
The Rapide E features the luxury interior features people have come to expect from Aston Martin. Sporty seats with leather upholstery are standard. The Rapide E features 11.2 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk. Cargo space can be increased by folding down the rear seats. The Rapide E comes equipped with a 10-inch digital gauge cluster in the dash. The gauge cluster allows drivers to quickly access information such as battery charge level and consumption, battery regeneration, speed, and power level. Drivers can use a smartphone app to get information on their Rapide E’s battery and charging status from anywhere.
Aston Martin and Williams Advanced Engineering removed the 550-hp V-12 engine of the Rapide S. In its place are two rear-mounted electric motors that provide a whopping 602 horsepower and 701 pound-feet of torque. The battery is an 800-volt, 65.0 kWh pack. The Rapide E powertrain has three driving modes, a limited-slip differential, and a modified suspension. These features ensure that the electric car has the same smooth handling as its gasoline counterpart.
Trading gas for electric often means making trade-offs in performance. This is not the case with Aston Martin’s Rapide E. The Rapide E can go from zero to 60 in less than four seconds and reach a top speed of 155 miles per hour. Most impressive is the fact that the Rapide E performance is not dependent on the charge of the battery. Drivers get sports-car performance no matter what the charge level is on the battery. On a full charge, the Rapide E can drive over 200 miles. At a fast-charging hub, the Rapid E can fully charge in three hours due to its 800-volt fast-charging tech.
